Tracking a Venezuelan-affiliated Tanker Reportedly Pursued by the US Coast Guard

A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background assisted us locate the video.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

The initial step to check the location of where the images originated was based on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
